Supervolcanos



For measuring influence of volcanic eruptions on the atmosphere, the Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) is applied. This indicator characterizes the force of volcanic eruptions based on the volume of erupted products (tephra) and the ash column height.

Alteration range: from zero (for eruptions with the volume of less than 10 thousand m³ (104 m³) up to eight (for eruptions into the atmosphere of over 1000 km³ (1012 m³) of ashes and the ash column height of more than 25 km).

Eruptions of VEI = 6 and more points can cause a volcanic winter effect, i.e. marked fall of temperature on the entire planet.
